Common questions
What is the best wildfire risk assessment app?
The thing to check is what scale it works at. Public risk layers are usually modeled at county or watershed level, which is too coarse to act on for a single property. FUELBREAK runs assessment at parcel level as well as landscape scale, and was designed by firefighters rather than adapted from generic GIS software.
How do I find out the wildfire risk for my property?
Start with your county or state forestry agency, which often publishes a regional hazard layer for free. For anything you intend to spend money on, you want an assessment run against your own slope, aspect and fuel conditions — a regional rating won't tell you which side of the property to clear first.
Can mitigation companies use this with clients?
That's one of the main uses. Tree services and fire mitigation crews run an assessment and use the output to show a client which areas most need removal, which turns a judgement call into something the client can see.
