What this tool actually measures

This service collects publicly available commentary — forum posts, articles, social posts, filings, transcripts — scores each document for sentiment using automated methods, and compares those scores against historical price movement.

A sentiment score is a measurement of what was said. It is not a forecast, a valuation, a price target, or a signal to act. Correlation between sentiment and price does not establish that one causes the other, and the analysis repeatedly finds that commentary follows price more reliably than it leads it.

Sample sizes are small. Statistics computed over weeks or months of daily observations are unreliable, and the dashboard reports which findings survive correction for multiple testing precisely because most do not.

Hypothetical and backtested results

Hypothetical performance. These results are hypothetical, not actual trading. The trades were selected after the fact, with knowledge of what the prices did — nobody could have identified them in advance. Hypothetical results carry no allowance for market impact, liquidity, borrowing costs, taxes, or the emotional reality of holding a losing position, and they benefit from hindsight in ways real trading never does. They are shown to illustrate the size of historical moves, not as returns that were or could have been achieved.

Backtested strategy comparisons are subject to the same limitations, plus survivorship and selection effects: rules were evaluated after the period they are tested on, and parameters can be adjusted until results look favourable. Every parameter change is another trial, and enough trials will produce an impressive-looking result from noise alone.

Data accuracy and sources

Data comes from third-party sources including public APIs, RSS feeds, web pages, and market data providers. We do not guarantee its accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or availability, and it may contain errors, omissions, or delays.

Sentiment scoring is automated and imperfect. It misreads sarcasm, irony, and domain jargon, and it cannot distinguish an informed analyst from an anonymous account or a coordinated promotion.

Inclusion of a source means we read and scored it. It is not an endorsement of that source's accuracy, and we are not responsible for third-party content.

Risk

All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Securities markets are volatile and can decline significantly.
